The H-F Skating School is designed for skaters of all ages and abilities. Whether you’ve skated before or are stepping on the ice for the first time, you will find that our classes introduce skills progressively, so that you master them at your pace.

For the recreational skater, we offer a variety of classes that teach all aspects of figure skating and hockey in a setting that emphasizes fun and recreation. For the more competitive figure skater, our classes may be supplemented with private lessons from one of our many staff instructors. Hockey players are encouraged to join our youth hockey program in the fall, winter and spring, or one of our year-round adult leagues.

As with any skill, in skating practice is the key to success. Our public sessions and special events are great opportunities to practice skating skills and spend quality family time together.

Learn to Skate Youth:

Skating for beginners is designed for those who want to learn the fundamentals of skating. Learn to Skate Youth includes the proper way to fall, get up, advanced forward marching and gliding. This class also introduces backward skating, balancing on two feet, beginning forward swizzles and beginning snowplow stops on two feet.

 

Beginner 1:

Beginner 1 skaters will work on the following: skating forward across the ice, forward one-foot glides, advanced forward swizzles, beginning backward swizzles, and more. Some skaters may repeat levels.

 

Beginner 2:

Beginner 2 skaters will work on the following: scooter pushes, backward two-foot glides, rocking horse, advanced backward swizzles, two-foot turns from forward to backward in place and moving snowplow stop. Skaters may repeat levels.

 

Basic Skills 3:

Basic Skills 3 will be a review of Beginner 1 & 2, in addition to other USFS maneuvers. This level includes forward stroking, forward pumps on a circle, moving forward to backward two-foot turns on a circle and more. Skaters may repeat levels.

 

Basic Skills 4:

Basic Skills 4 includes more advanced glides in both forward and backward positions then basic skills 3. Skaters will be taught backward stroking, three-turns, backwards stops and more. Some skaters may repeat levels.

 

Basic Skills 5:

Skaters who are ready for Basic Skills 5 will learn backward crossovers, advanced backward glides and edges in addition to the entry of a one-foot spin. Other maneuvers will be introduced as well. Some skaters may repeat levels.

 

Basic Skills 6:

The skater who is ready for Basic Skills 6 has really made the commitment to skating. A Basic Skills 6 skater will be taught forward arabesques also known as spirals, T-stops, bunny hops, inside three-turns and more. Some skaters may repeat levels.

 

 

Pre-Free Skate:

Skaters who are ready for Pre-Free Skate will learn how to transition from a forward position to a back position on one foot, be introduced to a proper land position, a forward pivot and more. Skills become polished in preparation for Free Skate. Some skaters may repeat levels.

 

Free Skate 1:

Congratulations, you made it to Free Skate! Skaters in Free Skate 1 will work on advanced forward stroking, forward edges, backwards three-turns and familiar jumps and spins. Skaters will be required to execute each required element with speed, grace and control. It is strongly recommended that students skate more than once a week and/or take private lessons.

 

Free Skate 2:

Free Skate 2 is designed to enhance your jump and spin skills. Skaters will be introduced to jump sequences, basic footwork and advanced patterns. It is strongly recommended that students skate more than once a week and/or take private lessons.

 

Free Skate 3:

A Free Skate 3 skater will be taught single jump combinations, backward figure eight patterns, backward spins and more. It is strongly recommended that students skate more than once a week and/or take private lessons.

 

Free Skate 4:

The Free Skate 4 class will include sit spins, loop jumps and loop jump combinations as well as spiral sequence patterns and more. It is strongly recommended that students skate more than once a week and/or take private lessons.

 

Free Skate 5:

Skaters in Free Skate 5 will learn Camel spins, Flip jumps, advanced footwork and patterns as well as advanced jump sequences. Skaters will also be introduced to additional jump combinations from previous levels. It is strongly recommended that students skate more than once a week and/or take private lessons.

 

Free Skate 6:

Skaters in Free Skate 6 will learn more advanced footwork and patterns as well as advanced jump sequences. Skaters will also be introduced to different jump combinations. It is strongly recommended that students skate more than once a week and/or take private lessons.

Adult Skating - Beginner:

Beginner adult skating is for any skater age 13 and above. Skaters will be taught the basics of skating and the proper use of form. Skaters may be introduced to spins and basic jumps with proper technique and positioning. They will also be taught advanced one turns and transitions from forward to backwards.

 

Adult Skating - Advanced:

This adult class is for any skater who is looking to learn more advanced skills in skating. Skaters will work on the proper form for jumps and spins, moves, edges, three-turns and much more. Skaters will work at their own pace.

Figure Skating Power:

Every skater needs a little more endurance in order to achieve their ultimate skating goal. This power class is available to skaters Basic Skills 6 and above. They will have an intense thirty minute workout choreographed to current music that incorporates the appropriate skating skills and drills. Skaters must be in proper skating attire and ready for a workout!

 

Off-Ice Training:

This specialty class is available to all freestyle level skaters. Off-ice training will focus on the basic techniques for stretching before and after each on-ice practice or lesson. Skaters will be learning to strengthen their legs and core to become more powerful skaters. Along with strengthening the legs for power, skater will learn proper balance techniques to improve overall skating.

 

Freestyle Formula:

To be successful in freestyle, you must be aware of all the ingredients that make up a freestyle skater. It’s not just about the jumps and spins; it’s also about strength and power, muscle memory, edges and posture, creativity and musical interpretation. This class is open to all Free Skate levels. It is recommended and strongly encouraged that skaters also participate in their allotted free skate class/freestyle session in addition to this class.
